My friends and I don't officially have handicaps, so I've created this spreadsheet (while procrastinating at work) to help others who want to know what their handicaps would be using the Aust. Handicap Formula as defined by golfer69 in some other thread It should be pretty self explanatory. But here is a brief how-to: 1. Work out your Initial Handicap by entering CCR and total score for 5 rounds. 'Strokes over double bogey' is the TOTAL number of strokes played OVER a double bogey. Example, if I shot 9 shots on a par 5, then that would be 2 strokes over double bogey (which would be 7 in this case).
Enter your initial handicap in the 'Current Handicap' sheet 3. Calc your Current Handicap by entering CCR and score for your round (and for subsequent rounds) 4.
I've also added a couple of extra columns for basic stat keeping. Putts, Greens in Reg, and Fairways Hit. Hi FRB Your spreadsheet doesn't seem to quite tally with my golflink history. I started at the same point in the spreadsheet as when I joined a club in Nov last year (initial hcp 16). Comparing the 2 I suspect there must be some rounding errors in your formula?
For example as I have gradually come down to 12 according to golflink I have only come down to 13 according to your spreadsheet. It would appear that it is the hcp reduction calculations that are not quite right. For eg, in some instances I come down by 0.5 when this clearly cannot be the case as I was in (at the time) the range of deducting 0.3 per stroke better than handicap. I have attached the spreadsheet and my golflink record should be in my signature for you to check in case I have done something dumb. Please don't take this as being ungrateful or attacking you, I think it's great to have a spreadsheet like this for people to access and I appreciate the time and effort you have put into it.

Handicap Index can be calculated using the USGA (United States Golf Association) Slope and Course Rating. A golf player attends 5 rounds and his adjusted gross scores are 75, 73, 80, 85, 90 and the USGA Course rating is 61.2,60, 68, 71, 67 slope rating is 110, 113, 117, 130, 121.

I just wanted to make sure it's works properly for people to enjoy and use. Thanks for the feedback. I can see whats going on and how the discrepancy came about.
My assumption was that the exact handicap would be used to calculate handicap reductions but in actual fact it appears that the playing handicap is used for this. For example, When you were playing off 14.7 and shot to 13, GL used your playing handicap of 15 to calc your reduction 14.7 - (2. 0.3) = 14.1, whereas I used your exact 14.7 - (1.7. 0.3) = 14.19 (which shows in the SS as 14.2) Although I think that my way is more precise and accurate, seeing as Golflink is official I'll resign myself to changing the sheet. Haha I'll upload the revision after I can get it to reconcile with your Golflink.
Have a look at this Extract from doc When a player's handicap is to be reduced so that it goes from a higher category to a lower category, it is reduced at the rate appropriate to the higher category only so far as brings his playing handicap into the lower category – the balance of the reduction should be at the rate appropriate to the lower category. For example: A player on 20.2 returns a score with a differential of 14, i.e. 6 strokes below his playing handicap of 20; his reduction is as follows: 20.2 - (2 x.4) (i.e.8) = 19.4 19.4 - (4 x.3) (i.e.1.2) = 18.2. QUOTE: fatrabbitbrain @ Apr 16 2007, 05:00 PM Fyrippu - Does Golflink actually calculate handicaps across different bands as you suggested? I would just assume you take a weighted average to do it. But I don't think I can be bothered to do it. Only where the calculation encounters a change in the handicap bracket.
I only found out when I was comparing my handicap history to golflink and I had a discrepancy that had suddenly appeared. I originally thought that the entire adjustment would be at the original rate (eg all at 0.4 per stroke under CCR) and that the new bracket would kick in from that point onwards. However the golflink calculation kicks into the lower bracket as soon as the threshold is crossed and the remainder of the stroke adjustment calculated at the lower bracket rate. It was an interesting problem to solve.
